Resetting Your Mac Password from the Same Account

To reset your Mac password from the same account, follow these steps:

1. Fill in the New password, Verify and Password hint fields.

2. Select the account you've forgotten the password for in the sidebar.

3. In Monterey or older, click the lock icon in the bottom left of the window and enter the password again. In Ventura, open System Settings > Users & Groups.

4. Add a Password hint (so that it doesn't get forgotten again).

5. Enter the password you are logged in with.

6. Click on the i beside the account you've forgotten the password for.

Resetting Your Mac Password from Another Account

If you know the password to another account for your Mac, you can use this account to reset your password. Do you share your Mac with someone else and do they have their own account? Or is there an administrator who looks after your work Mac or IT guy (or girl) who might be able to log on? If so, follow these steps:

1. Select the account you know the password to.

2. Either restart the Mac, or if it is logged in click on the Apple logo and choose Log Out.
